Around the campfires
I am known as Rainbow, but my real name is Sherry Williams.
Girl Scouting has been part of my life for 35 years. Eleven of those years were spent as a
girl in the San Jacinto Girl Scout Council and 23 years as an adult volunteer. I really
found my love for girl scouting when I became the leader of Troop 5195 in 1982 and watched
each of them graduate in 1994. Being a girl scout has given me the opportunity to share my
love for the program and to touch the lives of others. Because of this I became a lifetime
Girl Scout in the San Jacinto Girl Scout Council, which is located in Houston, Texas.
My time as an adult girl scout has kept me active in many areas of the council. During my
early years I served as a Troop Leader, Consultant, Organizer, Assistant Service Unit
Manager and Service Unit Manager. I have also served as Nominating Committee Chairman,
Cookie Chairman, Service Unit Events Coordinator, District training Coordinator, and
Cadette Event Program Chairman. I have been a council trainer for 19 years and I am
currently a master trainer, training Brownies, Administrative, Specials and
Camp Kitchen Certification. I also serve on the Training Committee
as the Brownie Level Coordinator.
One of my greatest moments in Girl Scouting was the year that my family and I were
presented with the Council Family Award. I have also been presented the Outstanding Leader
Award and the Council Appreciation Certificate. However the most heartfelt moments
were
1995 when my old troop leader, who was then serving as President of the council, presented me with
the Honor Pin and in May, 2000 when I received the Thanks Badge and once
again my troop leader presented it to me.
Many people ask me how I can work a full time job and can be so committed to Girl Scouts.
I simply tell them, "I work to put food on the table, but I am in Girl Scouts because
it makes me who I am". One of my favorite quotes is "People don't care how much
you know, unless they know how much you care". |
